Russian Foundation for advanced studies (DRF) in the near future will experience a mini-Pigi technology immersion in artificial hibernation, which in the future will be able to save people in the accident on the space station, submarine or the wounded on the battlefield. The technology involves the introduction of experimental animals of a special drug, which slow down such vital functions as heartbeat, respiration, and lowering body temperature.

"We started with mice, rats and rabbits. We will continue to explore the drug on the mini-Pigi (the dwarf breed of pigs – approx. TASS), on – the primates"- said Deputy head of the laboratory of the Institute of cell Biophysics of Nadezhda Zaharova.

In PEF explained that the cardiovascular system of the dwarf pigs very similar to human. Animals to check the safety of the drug, will determine contraindications and side effects. In case of positive results of its "can be tested on humans in three to five years" according to the head of the project group FPI Professor Anatoly Kovtun.

He said that the drug in the future will be applied in critical situations that occur in confined spaces (submarine or space station). Receiving damage or not having enough oxygen to breathe, the person using the drug will slow down the function of your body and wait for help. "The use of the drug, in particular, will help people survive in case of accidents in the mines, when the oxygen concentration decreases"- said the Professor. The tool will also save the lives of wounded in combat soldier to the moment of delivery to the place of qualified medical help.

The tool will be useful in the Institute of emergency care in acute blood loss, stroke or heart attack. While the FPI stressed that the drug is not therapeutic, the technology only prolongs "Golden hour" (the period of time after a serious injury, in which it is still possible to provide effective assistance).

How it works

Scientists have identified "target organs" that via specific receptor directed effects of the drug. When administered to a consistently reduced heart rate, respiratory movements, oxygen consumption and body temperature.
